Introduction I always knew that I wanted to become a police officer, so I decided to interview a Police Captain. I interviewed Police Captain John Carpenter of Riverside Police Department. I found him through Riverside Police Department after looking around at the organizational chart I found online and looking at the titles that were on the chart. The Police Captain is one rank above a Lieutenant, but one below a Deputy Chief. A Police Captain is in charge of a certain precinct, and normally has his/her own division. Captain Carpenter is currently in charge of investigations, such as gangs, narcotics, vice, and intelligence units. The first portion of the paper will discuss qualities and requirements for the position, while the second portion of the paper will go more in depth into the occupation, such as the training required, how candidates are chosen, and salary. Becoming a Police Officer: Qualities and Characteristics Discussing with Captain Carpenter, we talked about the qualities that a police officer would need to have: 1) Hard worker 2) Dedicated 3) Team oriented (Has a partner so they need to work well with others) 4) Physically Fit 5) Good Judgement and problem solving skills 6) Good listener 7) Assertive Experience required: -In order to become a police officer, there is no experience required, however to move up to a detective, there is a minimum of 5-10 years working on patrol before you can be part of an investigations unit.
